Recreation Advisory Board Minutes
February 22, 2021
Page 3of5
Admission will be the same as in previous years, with the exception that
rainchecks, or moving to the rec center if the weather is bad, will not be
permitted.
Board discussion about Memory Square:
• The board discussed how a large swim team can practice and have
meets, while following COVID safety protocols. The schools have been
figuring out how to follow safety protocols, using ideas such as virtual
meets, and the the summer swim team can follow their lead.
• Summer camps will not go to Memory Square pool, as they have done in
the past.
• Even though it's hard to find enough lifeguards in this area, Kathy Martin
stated that the city is proactive in recruiting and training. Lower -cost
training is one way that the city encourages potential employees.
• The Memory Square plan was well received by board members.
Recreation and Senior Center Updates
• Kathy Martin reported that the rec center is seeing higher attendance, with
added capacity in open swim times and other programming. The weekend
Surf & Turf special event is almost sold out. The rec center is now open on
Sundays. Daily attendance numbers are in the 600's, which is an
improvement, but not at the pre-COVID level in the 2,000's.
Kathy Martin asked for responses to a suggestion to add pickleball lines to
the tennis courts at Centennial Park. A couple of board members
explained that pickleball lines on the tennis courts would make them
unusable for USTA-sanctioned tennis league matches. One tennis match
often requires five courts, and there are usually a couple of home matches
scheduled at the same time. Pickleball players currently have five courts
at the skating rink at specified times and a court on the single tennis court
on Lois Drive, east of the Warembourg Fishing Pond. Kathy reported that
the gym is now available for pickleball times. The Lois Drive
tennis/pickleball court is not in good condition. Cottonwood Park was
suggested as a good site for pickleball courts, as they require less space
than tennis courts.
The detention center south of the rec center has been considered for
recreational use, such as an outdoor pool facility or public field, but there
are no plans at the moment. Redtail Ridge and the land near the police
department could be sites for recreational use, which is something to
consider in the future.
