The Boulder County Youth Corps Louisville Team
started is the
11 th year that the City has been fortunate to have this hard
working and enthusiastic group of
teenagers,
During the beginning of the sea- _
son the crew was busy at the Histori-
cal Museum where they constructed
a trail, planted native vegetation, and
installed a drip irrigation system,
way and Davidson Mesa Open Space
111istle! Another big
project included the removal of Russian Olive Trees, a non
ing skills to use on the flower boxes at the Recreation Center
at
Youth Corps' last day of work was August 7th, We appreciate
their hard work and the great improvements they have made
towards the natural resources on our open space properties as
well as to the beautification of the city,
NEW CREATURES ON THE PRAIRIE

If you happen to be out at dawn or dusk observing prai-
rie dog colonies you might notice some new creatures
prowling around, Don't be alarmed it is just the Burrowing
Owl Volunteer team!
Burrowing Owl populations have been in decline through-
out western North America and they are classified as a "threat-
ened" species in Colorado, Because of this "threatened" status,
the Land Management Department has trained two teams of
volunteers to observe prairie dog colonies for the presence of
Burrowing Owls (Athene cunicularia),
Monitoring will occur for several months and will include
transect work as well as broadcast surveys (a method approved
by the Colorado Division of Wildlife) , Feel free to waive at
our friendly volunteers but please stay on the designated trail
and keep your voices low so that the survey will run smoothly,
