Cityof
U Louisville
City Manager's Office
Memorandum
To: Louisville Sustainability Advisory Board
From: Katie Baum, Sustainability Coordinator
Date: May 19, 2021
Re: Discussion Item 8: Citizen Action Discussion: Sustainable
Neighborhoods Network
Background
At LSAB's April meeting, there was interest to discuss new ideas and platforms to engage citizen mobilization
and encourage decentralized climate action. To continue the conversation, staff has had ongoing conversations
with surrounding communities and regional efforts around this idea.
The Sustainable Neighborhoods Program provides support to neighborhoods in order to advance neighborhood -
level climate action and empower residents to create sustainable and resilient communities. Sustainable
Neighborhoods Program was created by the City of Lakewood, Colorado in 2012. Following major program
successes, Lakewood began to receive inquiries from other municipalities interested in adopting the program.
The City and County of Denver began implementing the program in 2013, and since that time, Wheat Ridge and
Fort Collins have successfully launched the program.
The Sustainable Neighborhoods Program gives residents the opportunity to become active partners in making a
vibrant and sustainable community. Neighborhoods participating in this unique certification program use
guidance from city/county staff to organize workshops, projects, and events that enhance the livability of their
neighborhood and reduce residents' ecological footprint. Participating neighborhoods earn program credits for
their efforts and, depending on the number of credits earned in a given year, may receive designation as a
"Participating Sustainable Neighborhood" or an "Outstanding Sustainable Neighborhood" from the city/county.
The Sustainable Neighborhoods Program focuses on five broad goal categories and associated target areas.
Participating neighborhoods use these goal areas to guide their selection of workshop topics and neighborhood
initiatives. The goal categories are energy, air, water, land, and people.
Presentation on Sustainable Neighborhoods Program by Taylor Moellers, Sustainable Neighborhoods
Administrator for City and County of Denver.
