Analysis of Tennis and Pickleball in Louisville, CO
Report to Nathan Mosely and the Recreation Advisory Board, May 2021 by Gene
Kutscher
Short Term Goals:
1. Prevent deterioration of our facilities
The city tennis courts need to be inspected and maintained more frequently
and thoroughly, as they are precious investments. As an example, on the
Centennial Park tennis courts, the wind screens were never rolled up for the
winter, and so became frayed. In addition, the southwestern corner area of the
westernmost court's fence is open at the bottom, allowing balls to pass
through. It has been open for at least a year. Most importantly, there are cracks
that are spreading between the two easternmost courts. They have been
repaired in the past, but are again opening up.
2. Expand the availability of pickleball courts without removing precious tennis
courts from the community. The goal is to enhance, not compete, for facilities.
a. Paint pickleball courts on one or two non -tennis facilities that already exist
but are not widely used. Both sports can be played, enhancing the community's
opportunities for exercise. A candidate might be the basketball full court at
Community Park. Starting at half court, lines for pickleball can be drawn for at
least two courts. People can supply their own nets, paddles and balls.
b. The single tennis court near the Warembourg Open Space already has both
tennis and pickleball lines, but is in poor shape. This court should be refurbished
as quickly as budget allows, with new lines for both regular tennis and 2-4
pickleball courts. A committee could decide the bast number of pickleball courts
to maximize use by both groups.
c. Promote/advertise the use of and proposed improvements to our facilities.
Intermediate Goals:
1. Plan for the addition of two dedicated tennis courts at Centennial Park. This
will enable league play at one location for an entire match, a major plus as
many other towns have this.
