City Council
Meeting Minutes
September 7, 2021
adopting some of the recommendations from the earlier ABCx2 consultant report
including noise mitigation.
Councilmember Lipton asked Michael Burek, Louisville resident and data scientist, for a
presentation of his research and information on aircraft traffic visualizations. Burek stated
the presentation shows the data of flight activity from RMMA and overflights over
Louisville; it is not interpreting that data. His information focused on June 2021 flights
overpassing Louisville. He reviewed his methodology noting the flight counts were unique
flights over Louisville from RMMA.
Burek reviewed the visualizations of the flight data from June including altitude,
frequency, time of day, and flight paths. He reviewed the increase in the number of flights
since 2019 and a comparison of flights over municipalities to the south of the airport.
Councilmember Lipton stated he hopes to have Burek give this same presentation to the
CNR to see if it can help in the development of flight paths that might get more voluntary
compliance and the use of flight corridors that have a lower impact on the communities
north of the airport. He noted this is the beginning of a long journey.
Councilmember Brown stated it is clear from this presentation that the communities to the
north of the airport are suffering the brunt of the noise.
Public Comments
Vicki Lawrence, 511 West Spruce Lane, state the airplane noise has increased greatly
over the years. She said the flights are at all hours and all days of the week. She should
like the City to see a decrease in existing flights not just work to keep the airport from
expanding flights.
Bri Lehman, Lafayette resident, pooling time with Deborah Atchison, stated Lafayette has
petitioned to join the CNR. She stated she represents the Save Our Skies alliance and
they are concerned about air traffic safety, local control, and other issues, but also noise.
She stated the leaded exhaust fuel of the planes puts a large amount of lead into the
atmosphere to the detriment of people's health and water.
Kat Moriarty, 1457 Hyacinth Way, Superior, asked if this presentation could be presented
to the Superior Board of Trustees.
Konstantin Azarov, 581 Spruce Circle, stated the RMMA noise procedures are
inadequate and don't give pilots good information on where to fly to be less intrusive. He
feels better more detailed noise abatement procedures would be a good first step and
likely doesn't require FAA approval.
