those of the Di Francia family living at 1045 La Farge, that they were already renting either 1013 <br />or 1021 La Farge from the DiFrancia family before purchasing 1021 La Farge in 1927. <br />Census records for 1930 show that at that time, Steve and Winifred Davis were temporarily <br />living in Wyoming, where he was also working as a miner. <br />Steve Davis was one of eight coal miners who were killed in the Monarch Mine Explosion on <br />January 20, 1936. The location of the Monarch Mine was just south of Louisville. This block of <br />La Farge was especially hard hit, since Tom Stevens, who lived at the family home of his wife, <br />Josephine Biella Stevens, at 1016 La Farge, was also killed in the explosion. According to June <br />Giorzelli Enrietto, who grew up on the block, the neighbors on the block took these losses hard. <br />The tragedy had a long-lasting impact on the Louisville community. <br />Widowed, Winifred Davis continued to live in the house at 1021 La Farge.
