those of the Di Francia family living at 1045 La Farge, that they were already renting either 1013
or 1021 La Farge from the DiFrancia family before purchasing 1021 La Farge in 1927.
Census records for 1930 show that at that time, Steve and Winifred Davis were temporarily
living in Wyoming, where he was also working as a miner.
Steve Davis was one of eight coal miners who were killed in the Monarch Mine Explosion on
January 20, 1936. The location of the Monarch Mine was just south of Louisville. This block of
La Farge was especially hard hit, since Tom Stevens, who lived at the family home of his wife,
Josephine Biella Stevens, at 1016 La Farge, was also killed in the explosion. According to June
Giorzelli Enrietto, who grew up on the block, the neighbors on the block took these losses hard.
The tragedy had a long-lasting impact on the Louisville community.
Widowed, Winifred Davis continued to live in the house at 1021 La Farge. Louisville Times
articles indicate that she was very active in Louisville Methodist Church activities.
The following images show the photo and ground layout from the 1948 Boulder County
Assessor card:
5
