SWIMMING POOL HOURS CONT'D

suggestion was that the swim lessons be
from 7:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. - 10:00 A.M.
to 7:00 P.M. open to the public and from
7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. for the swim team.
Mr. He1art remarked that if the morning
hours were reserved for the public, it
would e1eminate some of the swim lessons
as they have had to double up because of
the demand.
Councilman Caranci read from the schedule
7:00 - 10:00 A.M. for swim lessons which
is 3 hours per day; take the older children
at 7:00 and the younger children at 10:00.
Mr. He1art replied parental demand was that
they didn't want their children down there
that early in the morning. He was very
reluctant to change the swim lesson hours
due to the fact this is one of the highest
demand things at the pool. It was his
belief that it should be maintained in the
morning.
Councilman Caranci stated another thing he
thought was wrong was that the pool was
being closed too early in the season. The
pool is being closed August 30th, and it is
still warm at least the first two weeks in
September.
Mr. He1art related this was due to a staff-
ing problem. Most generally the staff con-
sists of high school, college students and
teachers, and all these people go back to
school and full-time employment. Since none
of the sraff for the pool are permanent
employees and must be state certified life-
guards he could see no objections to opening
the pool on weekends and a trail period of
a few nights a week, providing the weather
is agreeable and the demand is there. We
must look at the cost impact and then report
back to see if it is feasible to extend the
season.
Councilman DiCarlo questioned the schedule -
swim team will have its first meeting May
22nd; are they going to meet daily until
the 31st?
Mr. He1art replied they would not as they
are still in school.
Councilman DiCarlo asked whether they would
meet after school?
Mr. He1art's reply was possibly between 5
and 6 in the evening.
Councilman DiCarlo then suggested it be opene
to the public those nine days also.
Mr. He1art reported their intention was to
open the pool officially May 29th.

-4-
