City Council
Study Session Summary
July 14, 2009
housing units. There is a growing need for housing in the range of $680 - $1100
per month. The cost of housing is rising at a faster rate than the limited fixed
income of Seniors. Members provided information on the units needed in the
various ranges. Challenges that face senior housing projects are identifying a
developer willing to build housing, and finding affordable building sites. The
City’s plan calls for parameters of cross-sectional housing and incentives to build
affordable senior housing. Louisville is deficient in the quantity of housing in the
lower levels. SAB has identified housing needs, but needs assistance in finding
affordable sites. The price of property is so significantly high, that the monthly
rental payments would be out of most Seniors’ price range. A collective effort is
needed to discuss possible suggestions and creative ideas to address the issues
facing Senior housing.
Council members discussed the difficulty of obtaining property and the housing
economy that affects the cost of property. Councilors understand the importance
to retain Senior housing and housing for younger families moving into the area.
With the economy and recession the City is not in a position to start new projects.
Council does believe that there is a possible re-development project in the future.
SAB requests the City’s cooperation in identifying possible sites for Senior
Housing projects.
Promoting Social and Civic Engagement
Inter-generational programs have been successful and the plan is to increase
involvement. This past year SAB has seen an increase of the Seniors interaction
in social activities. Over 700 people have participated in the programs so far this
year. SAB presented an overview of accomplishments and 2009 goals.
Optimizing Physical and Mental Health and Well-Being
The Recreation Center assessment indicated that the Center needs to be more
age-friendly. Create our Future Awards were presented to Seniors in 2008.
A grant helped provide materials and plants for the 2009 gardening group,
Bloomin’ Seniors. In 2010 a Fitness Challenge in collaboration with Lafayette is
planned.
Maximizing Independence –
Staff addressed this quadrant.
Councilors expressed appreciation for the dedicated work and volunteerism of
the Seniors Group. Joe Stevens expressed that the City has a very active senior
group this year. Councilors, youth groups, and an intern have lent a great deal of
support to the Seniors.
