6. There is a new code section that will require carbon monoxide alarms in all
new residential construction and when doing any interior remodels or
alterations. The new State of Colorado legislation that went into effect on July
1, 2009 already requires these same requirements.
7. Swimming Pool entrapment avoidance requirements (that prevent a person
from being held down by water pressure on the swimming pool drains and
drowning) have been modified to match the new Virginia Graeme Baker Pool
and Safety Act that went into effect in early 2009.
8. Energy Code requirements are approximately 15% overall more restrictive
than the currently adopted 2006 IRe. Exterior wall insulation requirement has
been increased from R-19 to R-20. This will rule out using the typical
fiberglass batt insulation in 2 X 6 walls and will require a high density R-20
batt insulation or a spray cellulose R-20 insulation. There are more restrictive
requirements for heating duct leakage testing and for blower door testing to
verify air leakage at exterior building envelope. There is a requirement to
install programmable thermostats. There is a requirement to install at least
50% high efficacy light bulbs on interior and exterior of house (CFL or LED
light bulbs meet this requirement). There are requirements for energy
conservation measures for heated swimming pools.
9. Mechanical Code requirements will now require locking caps on access ports
on all exterior air conditioner condensers.
10. Mechanical Code requirements will now require make up air to be brought
into a kitchen that has a cooktop exhaust fan that exceeds 400 CFM.
11. Fuel Gas Code requirements will require all CSST (Corrugated Stainless
Steel) gas piping to be bonded to the house electrical service grounding
electrode. This will alleviate any problems if lighting strikes the house.
