2009 INTERNATIONAL ENERGY
CONSERVATION CODE

The International Energy Conservation Code is approximately 15% more restrictive
than the 2006 IECe.

Residential Multi Family buildings - R-20 insulation in exterior walls,
programmable thermostats, duct leakage testing, air leakage testing, 50% of light
bulbs to be high efficacy (CFL or LED), and new requirements for heated swimming
pools (see description of same changes under 2009 IRe.

Commercial buildings - all insulation requirements have been increased (walls,
attics, below grade), demand controlled ventilation and energy recovery ventilation
systems are now required, supply air temperature reset controls are now required, and
daylight zone controls are now required.

MIKE - I WILL MODIFY THIS ONCE I TAKE THE ENERGY CODE TRAINING
ON JUNE 22 PUT ON BY STATE

2009 INTERNATIONAL FIRE CODE

1. There is a new code section that clarifies that the provisions of the 2009
International Fire Code do not apply to the interior of single family homes or
townhomes that are built under the International Residential Code. It also clarifies
that the International Fire Code does apply to the exterior site access so that the
Fire Departments can verify the access required in order to determine if driveways
are big enough or if fire sprinklers might be required due to restricted access.
2. Emergency Responder Radio Coverage will now be required in all new and
existing buildings. We have had a local amendment that requires this in all new
buildings but this new code section will now require in all existing buildings.
Owners of buildings will have to work with North Metro Fire District to work out
the time frames. We should delete Section V "Public Safety Radio Amplification
System" out of our existing amendments to the NEC - we need to verify with
North Metro to see if new wording in IFC is adequate.
3. There is a new section that will require all existing 1-2 child care, hospitals,
mental hospitals, and nursing homes to have an approved fire sprinkler system
installed. There is no timetable and building owners will have to work with North
Metro Fire District to work out the time frames.
