SIMMONS
CITY ADMINISTRATOR
DATE: May 20, 1997
SUBJECT: Award Bid Drainageway A Storm Sewer Improvements
ORIGINATING DEPARTMENT: Public Works
SUMMARY: Over the last six months the Public Works Department has been working on formulating and
designing improvements within Drainageway A to reduce flooding in the downtown area. Drainageway A is
the drainage basin located from approximately Lafayette Street north and from Highway 42 west. The
improvements identified, in order to eliminate the drainage poblems, are construction of a large diameter storm
sewer from east of Highway 42 to Enrieto Park, and expansion of the detention capabilities at Enrieto Park and
Lake Park. The projected expense for the various improvements exceeds $1,000,000. Once completed, the
improvements are expected to remove 57 buildings from the flood plain.
Given the budget available for storm drainage improvements the Public Works Department has pursued Phase
I of the Drainageway A Improvements. Phase I is the storm sewer component which runs from east of Highway
42 to Enrieto Park. On April 4 bids were received for the storm sewer portion of the project. Bids were tailored
to include an amount of work that would fit the available budget as established at that time, plus alternates for
additional work needed to complete the storm sewer to Enrieto Park. The base bid and bid alternates are
described as follows:
Storm sewer construction from east of Highway 42 to the west side of the Burlington Northern
Railroad (BNRR) tracks.
Storm sewer construction from the west side of the railroad tracks to the east side of Enrieto
Park.
Open channel construction and grading east of Highway 42.
Bid deduct if Highway 42 is open cut.
and bid alternates by bidder are summarized on the attached bid summary.
CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE
SUBJECT AGENDA ITEM
Award Bid Drainageway A Storm Sewer Improvements
6A1
