Planning Commission
Meeting Minutes
April 8, 2010
Other public comments:
Garrett McCarthy, Old Louisville Inn owner, discussed how difficult it is to include
a company logo in the current square footage limitation. He also discussed a sign
style using downcast projection onto a sidewalk and asked if it would a permitted
sign in Louisville.
McCartney stated he would need to research before giving a definite yes or no
answer.
Commission questions to Menaker:
Loo and Lipton asked if the City was behind the times regarding LED signs. What
better way is available to a business to get the news out.
Menaker stated once an LED is made available there is no control as to what the
message would say.
Sheets expressed concern with how to regulate the context of the messages.
Lipton asked if the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) had an interest in
the signage for downtown.
Menaker stated he and McCartney had already coordinated his presenting the
th
power point at the March 19 HPC meeting.
Pritchard stated the downtown business owners should be contacted to get their
opinion of what works and does not work for signage. He stated there should be
flexibility in the downtown area regarding signs.
Lipton suggested the HPC be invited to next Planning Commission meeting to
continue the discussion of signage.
Russell thanked Menaker for his presentation. He stated the Commission needs
to hear from the community. He suggested a possible community task force of
members from the following groups: Planning Commission, Downtown Business
Association (DBA) and Historic Preservation Commission.
McCarthy asked if the commission was giving too much weight consideration to
the historic element of signage.
Russell stated the focus needs to be on the downtown area of town because of
its difference from the McCaslin area.
Sheets stated staff had met with members of the DBA and they want flexibility
and are feeling too constrained with the current requirements.
Russell stated this is not a PC, HPC or staff issue; it is a community issue.
Lipton stated he likes what Boulder has accomplished on Pearl Street. He
suggested their guidelines might be a starting point for the City. He still would like
to have HPC attend the next meeting to establish that working relationship.
Russell discussed “Breaking Roberts Rules” and encouraged the commission to
think outside the box and to consider breaking Roberts Rules.
