Mrs./filth Sohn
Exhibi 860 k Court
Louis e, Colorado 80027
May 1, 1984
Louisville City Council
Louisville
Colorado
Dear City Councilmembers:
As parents, my neighbors and I are concerned about the sate crossing of
South Boulder Road by children living in Mesa Point, Continental View
Estates and Hillsborough West subdivisions. The City Council must take
immediate action to provide a safe, permanent solution to the problem.
The following should be considered:
1. Coal Creek School--Because this school will service children on both sides
of the road there will be crossing on a regular basis. I invite
Councilmembers to monitor the traffic flow between 7:30-8 a.m. and then
calculate for yourselves how a 6-year-old will negotiate the road.
Because schools become community centers and provide a magnet effect
, the problem is not only a school hour problem. Children will want to
visit friends on the other side of the road and there will be sports
practice and other events scheduled for the school yard during non school
hours. A temporary solution during school hours like busing or a
crossing guard will not be enough.
2. Carnival Park--Because there is no park or other recreation facility on
the north side of the road children living there will be crossing on
a regular basis to use the one park that is available.
This seems like an appropriate time for the City to take action. The School
is not yet completed (but will be done in the next few months) , and the
County Commissioners are anticipating work on South Boulder Road shortly.
While any solution will cost money, it seems most economical for the
City to work with the County and the School district who must also share
responsibility for a solution that affects so ma.iy taxpayers. There
is precedent for the School district to work with city governments on
solutions to such problems and the County worked with Boulder on the ''7th
Street project. However, it must be the city of Louisville that initiates
this action and coordination.
The ideal solution would be a permanent overhead walkway with bike paths
that would unite the community on the Mesa. While a stop light could work.
because of the hill effect there is a good possibility cars would come over
the hill not expecting to stop or be temporarily blinded by rising or
setting sun light.
I know there are financial and aesthetic concerns. However. all that
pales when one considers how we would all feel when a tragedy occurs and
we realise if we had not been cheap or short sighted it could have been
prevented. I look forward to hearing your answer.
Sincerely,
frr/e. , •a • el.ter
Ardyth Sohn
