Historical Commission
Subcommittee Minutes
May 4, 2010

We think it's been remarkable that the Museum has accomplished so much with a one part time staff
member. The Commission would like for the Museum to have more staffing and be able to do more:
. More open hours
. More exhibits
a. immigration
b. day in the life of a miner
. Protect and catalog what we have
. Catch up on backlog of cataloging
. Make historical photos more accessible
. Build and expand the docent program with time dedicated to training, development and PR
for citizen docents
. More space so that artifacts in the collection can be adequately stored and preserved, and
so that storage does not impede on exhibit space or office space
. New building with storage, office and work space, and ADA accessible restrooms
. Open the Jordinelli House and summer kitchen

Other cities in Colorado provide more funding for their city owned and operated museums, to preserve
their histories and as a marketing tool

We have great assets here in Louisville, and Louisville history draws people downtown

It was noted that what many residents want from the Museum is to preserve items that have to do with
the town. Tourists, on the other hand, are seeking something interesting to look at and are interested in
hearing the story of Louisville.

The Commission is considering requesting approval of two full time staff members for the Museum, with
the recognition that more will eventually be needed in order to have the Museum be able to comply with
the best practices of museums.

On the question of how to communicate storage needs, Bridget Bacon stated that she can write a
memo that would summarize the needs in terms of best practices for museums and would cite the 2004
CAP report that recommended a new building for storage and work space.
