..-,.
the basics in place to go forward. You won't have to
tear up the sidewalks again. We did look at slides of all
sorts of really spiffy downtowns and we hope eventually
to have funds to accomplish a lot more romantic type
treatments that makes our downtown unique. With the
funding that we have now, you won't see much. You
need to know that Deanna's estimates do include
monies so that the sidewalks won't be ripped up again
if you want to put in fancy light poles, etc.
Sackett: My basic impression after reading the papers is that
people are expecting the fancy things. What do you
need, another $500,000.00?
Beckmann: At least. When we started going around the room
asking what everyone wanted, they wanted fancy things,
they wanted pizzazz but we realized how limited the
dollars were. The dollars just barely cover the basics on
some streets and not all streets are represented in terms
of the LafayettelLouisville Downtown Revitalization of
definition of downtown. We don't even have enough
funding now to provide the basic infrastructure that we
need just for streets and flooding situations, much less
pizzazz.
Sackett: Did someone put a pencil to that to say okay, what do
we need to do, the infrastructure and then give people
some tangible evidence that the downtown is being
revitalized from a cosmetic prospective?
Beckmann: Yes, there will be cosmetic things that you can see on
the blocks that are going to be done. Sidewalks will be
widened, it can include some extensions of sidewalks
into the intersection, maybe some brick treatment or
something a little more fancy then we have now.
Designers would need to be involved to do that. It is
not a major project where we could say there will be a
planter and a bench on every block at this stage of the
game.
Carnival: Tom, I know we talked about undergrounding utilities
and I heard reference this evening that what we are
doing is the stuff that needs to be done so that the
sidewalks don't have to be ripped up later. Have we
6
