--,'
forgot about undergrounding utilities, is that something
that should happen now? Didn't we talk about some
kind of franchise fee or money that is available now that
could go towards undergrounding and shouldn't we do
it now?
Phare: We are going to be meeting with the Public Service and
discuss that a little more. We will have more definitive
answers as we work our way through the project. We
endorsed a concept that would allow us to do as much
of the infrastructure underground so that we would have
minimal disruption in the future.
Beckmann: Deanna has a little bit of cost information on
undergrounding.
Phare: It comes from Public Service and it is not inexpensive to
put utilities lines underground. When we meet with
them, we will make sure that we have the right
numbers. Our first problem was that we didn't have
enough in the undergrounding allowance to do the
whole thing in 1992.
Carnival: The $400,000.00 that you are working with this year will
be solely allocated to the sewers and the sidewalk
improvements and will not have anything to do with the
underground utilities?
Beckmann: That is correct.
Oram: If we had chosen to underground, we would have to
give up one of those three blocks of sidewalk and street
improvements. We will get it clarified on Friday
morning when we meet. There is some money available
and I believe that the City Council will ultimately have
to decide whether and where to use it.
Carnival: My concern was that if we are doing all of this for the
sole purpose of not having to come back and rip things
up again and disturb the downtown merchants, then it
makes sense to try to do as much of the undergrounding
that we possible can while things are ripped up.
7
--
