Sustainability Advisory Board
Minutes
February 21, 2024
Discussion Item: Youth Advisory Board Collaboration —
Two members of the Youth Advisory Board presented their plans for a youth -
oriented scavenger hunt around downtown Louisville to increase awareness
about climate issues and what individuals could do to reduce their carbon
footprints. Their project for this year is being called "Eco-Seekers". This is a
youth environmental education outreach program to help educate the youth and
their parents on different types of climate rebates (including from the City of
Louisville), climate conservation activities, and local action that they can take to
help reduce their own carbon footprints and that of their families. The purpose of
their presentation was to get LSAB's input on what environmental information to
include into "QR code stations" that are planned for various sites around
downtown Louisville. They want to engage kids and their parents regarding
opportunities such as rebates for buying electric cars or electric lawn mowers.
Public Comment
There was no public comment on this item.
Board Discussion
Tiffany pointed out that a City web site already exists which lists all those
incentives, such as for induction stoves, heat pumps, etc. [See:
www.louisvilleco.gov/living-in-louisville/residents/sustainability/
community -decarbonization] The planned QR codes could go directly to that site,
because then it would consolidate accurate information in one place. This is
similar to what they did for the parade of lights: they turned this site into a QR
code so people could scan that and it would take them right to this page.
For people who prefer not to read, a QR code could connect to an audio file
which then tells them stories, with several different story tellers to select from.
It was suggested that the scavenger hunt could end at a location like the library
where the kids would get a sweet treat, or a day pass at the Rec Center, or a
Passport -type card with special deals, or "magic boxes".
