Parks & Public Landscaping Advisory Board
Minutes
July 10, 2024
Bryon Weber described area in diagram, generating an estimate of sq. ft. of concrete
Jody Ash agrees that does seem like a lot of concrete
Cynthia Corne requested presenter to zoom in on Plant schedule
Cynthia Corne: Can the board draft an official communication to staff and council on this
plan?
Adam Blackmore, yes, the PPLAB can make their recommendations
Cynthia Corne: Grateful for GoCo grant for these two parks. Are we looking at other
materials, other than concrete? Could it be a mix of materials?
Bryon Weber: concrete is both a plaza and has a retaining capacity because it is built
into the wall, ease of snow removal with concrete vs surface like gravel.
Cynthia Corne: Deciduous trees look like compelling choices, if budget allows us to
select larger trees, please do. Is it possible from a budgetary perspective to phase these
projects? Could we come back through and add additional landscaping in a later
phase. We should shift the design to move shade trees further into the park and away
from residences - significant distance, 10 feet away from fences. Grasses in median are
a seed mix
Ellen Toon: The amount of concrete in the plan is reasonable, and concrete is
appropriate for flood zones, probably can't relocate the social pad much due to flood
risk.
PPLAB drafted and approved the following statement:
"PPLAB recommend approval of the 90% design concept with the following
recommendations:
Larger saplings used where possible, placement of all plantings including trees and
shrubs to be setback from homes and fences with a standard metric recommended by
staff"
Bryon Weber: Many trees are placed on the southern and western side of the plaza to
provide shade, and advised the board to be mindful of placing too many restrictions on
where trees can be placed. Need shade, can better understand the recommended
setback.
6
