Parks & Public Landscaping Advisory Board <br />Minutes <br />July 10, 2024 <br />Page 6 of 8 <br />Board Comments: <br />Ellen Toon: there seem to be strong feelings about the plaza, use that money on <br />irrigation instead <br />Patricia Rogers: agree, the sunflower motif plaza seemed like an opportunity to <br />incorporate art, but that doesn't seem to be what people want. <br />Read Shannon's email (text is contained below) add fruit trees, Shannon's goal in <br />seeing community members able to harvest fruit across town, pollinator gardens. <br />Some ideas for trees include: Nanking cherry, Dolgo crabapple, or Serviceberry. <br />John Webb (joined late) on the shrubs : please don't use butterfly bush, Weigela, Miss <br />Kim lilac, Gro Low sumac, Dwarf burning bush - please use: flowers from native shrubs <br />in the spring with berries in summer and fall, draws wildlife into the park. <br />Jody Ash: Public wants trees and turf, don't want the plaza, consider seating, alternative <br />for Sunflower plaza. Please consider removing the thistle and give local neighbors the <br />turf and irrigation they are asking for. Could there be trees or shrubs used as a buffer <br />between park and traffic up on Washington? Agrees with John on plant list <br />recommendations, please use native shrubs instead. Mock oranges are great in her <br />opinion. Plant list seems limited. <br />Cynthia Corne comments: Spent some time at Sunflower Park, spoken to some <br />neighbors. Consider adding motif or climbable features (stump and stone) at southern <br />entrance to Sunflower Park (stump and stone) <br />Heard from people that it might be nice to have climbable features from one side of the <br />park, which could be one fun update for the park. <br />Abby McNeal: There is utility equipment that limits where those climbable features can <br />be placed. <br />Q: What will happen with the memory bench? <br />Written input from PPLAB member Shannon Milhaly on Sunflower Park: from neighbor <br />provided via <br />I apologize for the lateness of my email comments.
