Parks & Public Landscaping Advisory Board
Minutes
July 10, 2024
I'd like to throw my support behind community member Will Scherer's idea for fruit trees
in Sunflower Park.
When I joined PPLAB, this was one item I was specifically interested in supporting;
picking fruit throughout the City of Louisville is a family -favorite activity throughout the
summer and early fall.
Fruit trees are wonderful for pollinators in the spring. In addition, interest in "foraging" is
growing, with several community members often picking at their various "spots" around
town. Fruit trees at Sunflower Park would provide the community with an opportunity to
gather to pick something together.
A Nanking cherry tree (similar, if not the species in the medians on Cherry Street),
produces dime -nickel -size sour fruit in late June to early July is a great option. A sweet
crab apple such as a Dolgo crab apple (such as on the south and east side of Harper
Lake in the Open Space), would produce <golf ball size sweet crab apples in mid -late
August. Larger fruiting trees could be considered but might also bring a larger potential
for rotting fruit.
I am encouraged by all of the interest and creative ideas for Sunflower Park and look
forward to gathering there with the community again.
Draft PPLAB statement 1:
Consensus: Contingent approval of the 90% design. Plaza as currently proposed is not
recommended, this should be removed, the sunflower motif repurposed and irrigation
plan should be updated to include irrigation of the entire play area.
Revisit the plant list at 100% review, recommended removal of Weigala and Miss Kim
Lilac
We would like to see full turf replacement be considered either by project budget or Ops
budget. Please consider low water turf.
Adam: It's clear feedback, revisions at this point will be minimal considering past
approvals, and these kinds of modifications drop us back to 60-80% and will cause
delay. We are here to serve and will take these recommendations into account.
Bryon: distinction between removing the plaza and seat wall and relocating it. Regrading
will make some of the sled hill flatter.
9
