Sackett asked Pena when the petition was circulated where the citizens aware that this land was master planned and that the proceeds from the use of the land were used to ful- filling the requirements on the development of Via Appia and some of the other open space donations that were required from McStain. Pena stated he had explained it the best that he could and he explained to the volunteers the best he could. Sackett stated that if the city buys the land we are talking about that it is over a million dollars. At that you are still recommending that the city purchase the land even if we have to pay that price for the land? Pena stated he is recommending that we look at all avenues that are available to us in terms to funding. Can the city fund us? Can the county help us? Can the state help us? Yes the people know that this will cost a lot of money to have this project completed. Many people have said that if it would have to come to a ballet that they would entertain that. What we don't want is another 3 acre park, we don't want another pocket of land that is called a park. We want a large park and have a lot of area in the park. Sackett asked if Pena thought the people would be willing to be taxed to buy the park? Pena stated that if it came to that, yes. We certainly don't want to be taxed anymore than we have to be, but I think that we are con- cerned about the quality of life in our community. Howard felt some of the questions that are being asked could be answered in a work session. I would like to see staff look at the alternatives. Szymanski stated that she felt this was a lovely idea but we have to find out how we can go about it and if we can go about it and then the funding and how MaStain feels about it.
