PARKS & RECREATION NEWS GET READY FOR SUMMER SWIMMING T ocated at 801 Grant Street in the heart of Old 1 iTown Louisville, Memory Square Pool will be open for the summer season May 28th — August 15th. Annual Louisville Recreation Center members receive free admission. Pool hours and the swim lesson schedule will be available in the Summer Recreation Catalog. Join in the fun at Memory Square. Get a jump start on your summer swim season by being prepared in and around the water. American Red Cross swim lessons, lifeguard training, Water Safety In- structor, and swim aide courses are all offered at the Rec- reation Center with summer classes available at Memory Square Pool. Topics will include knots, casting, fish indentification and handling, habitat, laws, and more. Kids who complete the educational stations will re- cieve a children's fishing pole. Fishing license is required for parents and children over the age of 15. Space is limited, registration is available through the Recreation Center or at www.LouisvilleRecreation.com. NEW PARK SHELTER RENTAL RULES C oming soon!! The City is completeing a new and improved park shelter rental process. You may check park shelter availability and rent online at www LouisvilleRecreation.com. Click on "Facilities, Rentals, Park Rentals and Online Registration." Payment may be made by credit card. Additionally, there will be one rental rate, $95 for four hours at Community Park or $55 for four hours at all other park shelters. For detailed information on park shelter rentals, please visit the web site. CEMETERY EXPANSION & UPGRADES T he Louisville Cemetery is loved for its rural, hometown atmosphere and history. When the City realized the need for expansion and improvements at the cemetery, the significance of the historic and rural character was not overlooked. Preserving the character was a primary goal of the 2008 Cemetery Master Plan. Now that the cemetery expansion and improve- ments are complete, those efforts have been realized. The expansion area, follows the same circulation pattern and uses gravel roads to match the old cemetery. Landscap- ing has been kept simple and low maintenance. Because of the stark difference in the maturity of the trees from the old sections to the new, the City held off on fully planting the expansion area and plans to install addi- tional trees in varying years to encourage diversity in tree maturity as is the case in the older sections. The most visible improvement to the cemetery is the upgraded fencing and gates. New black metal picket fencing has been installed along the south and east sides of the cemetery and the historic gates at the Empire Road entrance have been refurbished. The overall result of the expansion and upgrades is a balance between maintaining and upgrading the newer sections and preserving the historic character of the older sections. The Louisville Cemetery is a beautiful, hometown, country cemetery. With continuing efforts of citizen groups and staff, it will remain that way for years to come. Spring 2010 4
