Creek Elen:tentary School, I just finished registration and they
have a current enrollment as of this afternoon of 570 kids.
They're past their program capacity. They now have to use the
science room for a classroom; music room for a kindergarten
room and they are marching. their way up to their building
capacity which is just a little over 600. I played with the figures
and I said to myself, ok, if you had two kids per house and you
have 130 kids and 1IJ or even ~ of them are from the
subdivision are elementary school children, we cannot even
afford twenty kids in Coal Creek right now. The sad part of
that is that it is not just Coal Creek that is crowded, it is
Fireside that is crowded and the school district has already said
they will not build another school in Superior. Having done
quite a bit of work with the school district we know how far
down the list we are. Right now as far as elementary schools,
ahead of us are North Boulder, Lafayette and Superior. All
this would be contingent on a bond issue that could be passed
in 1994. I am concerned that we can't provide schools for our
kids and what will happen is that those additional children will
be bussed someplace. My subdivision is Mesa Point. We were
told that people would not pay that kind of money and would
not have kids and we have a bundle of them. They were saying
the same for $700,000 homes in Rock Creek, that they
wouldn't have children. They need a new school. I feel it is
important issue and I think it needs to be looked at very
carefully. I really feel that it is important that as a City we
start pulling together school sites which would enable us to be
able to have places for those children to go. With this concern
alone I don't think I could support the letter of annexation
right now.
Howard: My concerns are similar but they come from a slightly different
angle. I've participated along with most of this Council and
perhaps many of you in the Futures Conference. Some of the
information that came out of the Futures Conference was that
22% of the population of Louisville is under five. That means
that 22% of the population is not yet in the elementary school
stream but they are going to be. This is not just a fleeting
problem and it is not a make believe kind of thing. This
should be a major concern to all the citizens of Louisville, not
just in terms of this annexation request but also in terms of
what are we going to do as a community. Right now we share
a high school with Lafayette and that bubble is going to build
up and probably over flow. The elementary schools are already
full and from all indications are going to get a lot fuller. That
means the middle schools are going to get fuller. My biggest
